How to Book 1-on-1 Virtual Fitness Coaching in the US (6 Steps)

By Nelly Flaque, NASM-Certified Personal Trainer · Online coach for clients across the US · Updated October 2026
The short answer: To book 1-on-1 virtual fitness coaching in the US: (1) write down your goal and schedule, (2) shortlist 2–3 certified coaches, (3) verify their certification, (4) book a free consultation call, (5) ask about programming, form feedback, check-ins and cancellation, then (6) sign up and complete the intake. Most coaches deliver your first custom program within a few days of the intake. At Nelly F Fitness, you start by filling out the coaching application, which books a free consultation.
Booking a coach takes about 20 minutes of work. Picking the right coach is where most people rush. Here's the process I'd follow if I were hiring a coach myself.
Step 1: Know your goal and your limits
Before you talk to anyone, write down:
Your goal: fat loss, muscle gain, strength, glutes, getting back in shape after a baby, or a competition.
Your schedule: how many days a week and how long per session.
Your equipment: full gym, home gym, or just dumbbells.
Your history: injuries, pain, and what's worked or failed before.
Your budget: a monthly number you can keep up for at least 3 months.
Step 2: Shortlist 2–3 coaches
Look for coaches who work with people like you. A coach who specializes in women's strength and fat loss is a better fit for that goal than a powerlifting coach. Check their website, client results, and whether they publish helpful content.
Step 3: Verify their certification
Look for an NCCA-accredited certification such as NASM, ACE, ACSM or NSCA. You can verify many of them on the USREPS registry by name. If nutrition coaching is included, ask about their nutrition credential too.
Step 4: Book a free 1-on-1 virtual fitness coaching consultation
Almost every good 1-on-1 virtual fitness coaching service offers a free call. It's your chance to judge the coach, and theirs to see if they can help you. If a coach won't talk to you before you pay, move on.
Step 5: Ask these questions on the call
Will my program be written from scratch for me?
How do I send form videos, and how fast do you reply?
When are check-ins, and what do you review?
Do you adjust my nutrition too?
How do I message you between check-ins?
What's the monthly cost, and how do I cancel?
What would my first 4 weeks look like?
Step 6: Sign up and complete your intake
After you sign up, expect an intake questionnaire, progress photos or measurements, and an app invite. Your first program should come within a few days. Give the first 4 weeks your full effort before judging results.
